Romulus wanted his city to be by the Tiber River because there are many trade routes that are by the Tiber river. One advantage about being by the Tiber river is that there is drinking water and you could import and export goods out of the river. One disadvantage is that other civilizations could easily go and invade the city by boat since the city is by a river.
Rome final essay
During the ancient Rome unit, I have learned a lot about ancient Rome. The geography of Italy impacted the expansion of Rome. The Tiber River played a role in the expansion of Rome because fresh water became available for drinking and the Romans could trade with other countries by traveling the river. Another thing that played a role in the expansion of Rome was the Mediterranean Sea. Rome won the Mediterranean Sea over Carthage in the third punic war. The Mediterranean Sea was a big impact on the expansion of Rome because they could travel to different lands and trade with the people there. Also, the Alps and the Apennine Mountains made an impact on the expansion of Rome because the mountains helped keep out invaders, so they could not destroy Rome. Roads were helpful in the expansion of Rome, so the soldiers could walk on them to battle. The expansion of Rome was really interesting, but now I will talk about Rome’s government.
Rome’s government was a republic, and it has similarities and differences to the United States government. One thing that the Romans influenced on the United States is that in Rome they had praetors which are like the judges of the Supreme Court and other judges in the United States. Instead of having nine praetors in Rome they had eight. The United States adapted the number of judges to nine judges to avoid a situation where there could be four judges for innocent and four judges for guilty. Now there are nine judges, so there would always be at least one deciding vote. In each government, there is a senate. In Rome, there was a senate made up of three hundred patricians. Now in the United States, we have a group of one hundred representatives in our senate today. Also, the Romans influenced our type of government, a democracy. The Romans had a democracy but only the senate could vote who they wanted to be the two consuls over the next year. Today in the United States, everyone who is the age of eighteen or older can vote for who they want the president to be over the next four years. I have talked about the government of Rome, now I will let Atilius from ancient roman times tell you about the Ides of March.
Hello, my name is Atilius and I am here to tell you about the Ides of March. The Ides of March is every year on March fifteenth, but the Ides of March in 44 B.C. was a special one that I will never forget. On the Ides of March, Julius Caesar received four warnings about his death at Pompey’s theatre. One warning was that his wife had a bad dream about him. Another warning was that Caesar sacrificed an animal that had no heart. Also, a soothsayer told Caesar that there was going to be danger on March fifteenth. The priests also sacrificed animals in his name, but they were all not favorable. It was surprising to me was that his best friend Marcus Brutus betrayed him. On that night, Marcus Brutus kept the plan a secret and brought Caesar to Pompey’s theatre. While he was there he was wondering what was going on, but then out of nowhere, twenty three senators came and killed Julius Caesar. Well, it was fun telling you about the Ides of March, now I will let Alec continue with his essay.
Thank You. There are four enduring impacts that ancient Rome had on later civilizations. One enduring impact is Architecture. The Romans influenced us today because we still use the arches and domes that the Romans constructed. Another impact is religion. The religion of Rome was Christianity and some people in the world have christianity as their religion today. Also, another impact is language. We still use the five romance languages that the Romans used in ancient Rome: Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Romanian, and French. Entertainment is also an enduring impact on later civilizations. The Romans had two types of plays; tragedies and comedies, which we still use today. Rome has impacted later civilizations in so many ways.
The emperors of Rome helped and hurt the empire of Rome in many ways. One emperor who helped the empire of Rome was Constantine. One way that Constantine helped Rome is that he made Christianity the official religion of Rome. Another way is that he created a new capital for Rome called Constantinople. An emperor who hurt the empire of Rome was Diocletian. One way is that he tried to improve the economy by controlling prices and wages, but it did not work. Another way is that the divided rule that Diocletian created quickly broke down and civil war started in the empire. I hope you liked my essay on ancient Rome.
